Lambke Family Gears Up for Hearst Castle Bike Challenge 2009...You Can Too!

"My family's first experience with a Best Buddies Bike Challenge was in 2004 at the Hearst Castle, when our son, Bryan and I rode a tandem bike fifteen miles down the Pacific Coast Highway to the Hearst Castle. It was a real challenge for us as we had never had the chance to ride that many miles up and down the hills that we encountered that day. My wife, Karen, who was there to support us, had as much fun as Bryan and I and we decided we wanted to experience another ride someday in which Karen wanted to ride along with us.

Two years later, in May of 2006, we had that opportunity when we participated in the Hyannis Port Bike Challenge on Cape Cod, with our daughter, Shauna, also joining us. We all rode twenty miles that day and again had so much fun that we vowed we would do it again.

Since then, we have all done the 2006 and 2008 Hearst Castle rides and we are now looking forward to riding in our fifth Best Buddies Bike Challenge at the Hearst Castle on September 12. Each time we do a ride, Bryan asks about riding the next one solo, which kind of freaks us out as it is a difficult ride with traffic streaming past throughout. Karen and I appreciate the fact that this is an event that has brought the four of us together as a team and it has allowed our entire family to be involved. How many people can say they hang out with their twenty-seven year old son and twenty-four year old daughter for a weekend of exercise and fun? We love Best Buddies and always feel a sense of accomplishment when we participate in these rides by the camaraderie we share and the money we help raise for our favorite non-profit organization." ~Tom Lambke
